The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the deployment of its personnel to designated locations across the country.

The measure is to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in ensuring a peaceful and secured environment for the Presidential and Parliamentary elections today (Saturday,December 7, 2024).

The Director General of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, in a statement emphasised the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the public in maintaining peace and order during the elections.

Professionalism

He reiterated GAF’s role as a stabilising force and reassured citizens of the military’s impartiality and professionalism.

"The GAF assures the public that this movement of military personnel is a routine measure aimed at enhancing election security. Citizens are urged not to be alarmed if they observe the presence of military personnel in their communities," the statement explained.

GAF role

According to the statement, one of the roles of the military would be to provide standby support and would only intervene upon request from the GPS.

Also, the police administration remains the lead agency responsible for election security, while the military’s involvement would be purely collaborative, ensuring a peaceful election process while maintaining law and order.

Civic conduct

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) encouraged all Ghanaians to exercise their voting rights peacefully.

"Citizens are urged to cooperate with security personnel and refrain from actions that could disrupt the peace or compromise the election's integrity," it read.
