The Frimpong-Manso Institute, local and international observation groups have been commended for supporting the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure peaceful general elections held last Saturday.
The international observation institutions that the EC commended included the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, gave the commendation in Accra on Monday December 9, 2024, during the declaration of the presidential election results.
Appreciation
Mrs. Mensa expressed gratitude to these organisations, as well as other electoral management bodies from across Africa, for their contributions toward ensuring a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.
"We are deeply grateful to all observers for their support and for journeying with us to this successful end. Your presence has further cemented the trust in our electoral process and set a high standard for elections across the continent," she said.
Mrs. Mensa also thanked the Ghana Police Service, the National Peace Council, and the citizens of Ghana for their cooperation and trust in the Commission’s work.
Transparency, accountability
The EC, she noted, took bold steps to uphold transparency and accountability, including re-exhibiting the Provisional Voters Register (PVR), waiving verification fees for voters, and responding swiftly to a ballot paper leakage incident by reprinting and replacing affected ballots.
On the back of these measures, the Commission delivered what Mrs. Mensa described as “elections that are free, fair, credible, and acceptable to all.”
She praised the seamless voting process, highlighting that voters spent an average of five minutes at polling stations and that the Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) worked efficiently to ensure the integrity of the elections.
Mrs. Mensa attributed the success of the elections to divine guidance, saying, “We are conscious that we could not have achieved this success without the help of the Almighty God, our anchor, without whom we can do nothing.”
