The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has lauded the people of Ghana for the successful and largely peaceful conduct of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, held on Saturday, December 7.
A statement jointly signed by its National President, Mrs. Efua Ghartey, and National Secretary, Mr. Kwaku Gyau Baffour, commended all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, polling station agents, domestic and international election observers, for their dedication to ensuring transparency and integrity throughout the electoral process.
Appreciation
The statement extended special appreciation to citizens who exercised their franchise with enthusiasm, describing it as a commitment to shaping the future of Ghana.
It also congratulated all Presidential candidates who contested the elections, with a particular nod to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his prompt concession speech, which was seen as a demonstration of statesmanship.
The statement further congratulated the President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his electoral victory and expressed the hope that his leadership would uphold and promote Ghana’s cherished democratic values.
Violence
While acknowledging the overall peaceful nature of the elections, the GBA condemned reported incidents of violence that led to loss of lives and extended condolences to the affected families.
The statement urged all Ghanaians to maintain unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence as hallmarks of the nation’s democracy, and called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in addressing cases of violence and destruction of property.
“The GBA makes a passionate appeal for an immediate end to all forms of lawlessness and calls on security agencies to handle cases of infringement with dispatch,” the statement emphasised.
It urged citizens to work towards a united and stronger Ghana, reiterating its hope that the nation will remain a beacon of democracy in Africa and beyond.
