Special voting has begun in fourteen regions in the country. The exercise is meant for members of the security agencies, the media and election officials who have been assigned duties on Saturday December 7 2024 to vote.

These categories of voters applied to the Commission and were put on the Special Voting List, to enable them to cast their ballots on a Special Voting Day for the 2024 general elections.

Flasback

Yesterday, the Electoral Commission suspended the special voting exercise in the Western and Eastern Regions following an incident that compelled the Commission to order a recall and a reprinting of ballots for the two regions.

The two regions will have their special voting on Thursday, 5th December before the general election on Saturday, December 7.

There are 328 special voting centres across the country and 131,478 voters representing 0.007 per cent of eligible voters in the country are on the special voting list.

In the 2024 General Elections there are over 18.7 million registered voters on the register constituting about 55 per cent of the country’s population.

Special Voting

The Commission's Chairperson, Jean Mensa stated at an emergency news conference on Sunday, December 1 that suspension of the exercise in the two regions became necessary after it was informed by National Security that a single defaced paper was taken out of Checkpoint Printing Limited, a Printing House.

The defaced paper she explained, was earmarked for destruction but unfortunately found its way out of the firm which has been working with the Commission since 1992.

She stated that the reprinting will be done by Dark Press and Innolink.

Mrs Mensa indicated that the security features of ballots for the two regions will be enhanced to differentiate them from the ones that have gone out adding that the total recall is to ensure the integrity of the election.
