The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned the public against engaging with two entities that promote unlicensed investment products through social media platforms.

In a public notice dated July 1, 2025, the SEC stated that News GH and Ghana News were found advertising unapproved financial schemes that promise high returns with little to no risk.

Unlicensed products

According to the SEC, News GH has been promoting a product called the "Gold AI Rise Platform," while Ghana News is involved in marketing another unnamed investment scheme. The Commission noted that neither entity is licensed to conduct any capital market activities under the Securities Industry Act, 2016 (Act 929), as amended by Act 1062 of 2021.

No regulatory approval

The Commission indicated that it had not granted regulatory approval to either entity and warned that such platforms pose serious risks to the investing public. It added that it is working in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to identify and take legal action against the individuals behind these operations.

The SEC advised the public to be cautious and avoid dealing with any unlicensed investment products. It urged individuals to verify the status of any capital market operator by contacting the Commission.

Notice

The Commission issued the notice in line with its mandate under Sections 3 and 208(c) of the Securities Industry Act, emphasising its commitment to protecting investors and promoting a transparent and secure financial market in Ghana.

Cyber Security Authority

In another development, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued warning about a surge in deepfake videos circulating on social media. These videos falsely feature prominent individuals, including government officials and media personalities, endorsing fake investments, fraudulent financial platforms, and unapproved medical products.

Identifying deepfake videos

The CSA, in addition has outlined how one can identify these videos on the internet. These include; mismatched lip movements with audio, unnatural eye movements or blinking, robotic or overly polished voice, unusual lighting, shadows, or background inconsistencies.

Protect yourself

CSA therefore cautioned citizens to verify authenticity of videos featuring national leaders or officials, not send money or personal information without confirming authenticity, checking investment and health claims with regulators like Bank of Ghana, Food and Drugs Authority, or other authorities.

Reporting suspicious activities

The CSA is working with social media platforms, law enforcement, and government institutions to identify and remove malicious videos and hold perpetrators accountable. The CSA has urged citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities via Text: 292; WhatsApp: 050-1603111 and on Email: report@csa.gov.gh
