Interacting with the media, Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, Public Relations Officer of GAMLS, emphasised that medical laboratory professionals include a diverse group of experts such as medical laboratory scientists, technical officers, and assistants. They work in hospitals, clinics, research institutions, public health facilities, and diagnostic laboratories, analysing patient samples such as blood, urine, and tissue.

Their findings provide critical information that helps physicians diagnose, treat, and monitor diseases effectively. Without their contributions, healthcare delivery would be significantly impaired, as laboratory test results influence nearly 70 per cent of clinical decisions.

Dr. Amegatcher underscored the vital role of Medical Laboratory Professionals, she said: Medical laboratory professionals are essential for accurate disease diagnosis. They conduct various tests to detect infections, chronic diseases, and genetic conditions, playing a pivotal role in diagnosing illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, COVID-19, diabetes, and cancer. By identifying pathogens and abnormalities early, they help prevent complications and improve patient outcomes.

Another crucial function is monitoring treatment progress. Routine and specialised tests enable healthcare providers to track how well a patient is responding to treatment and adjust medications or interventions accordingly. This process ensures that patients receive optimal care tailored to their specific health conditions.

Dr. Amegatcher noted that Medical Laboratory Professionals also play a significant role in blood safety. In blood banks and transfusion centres, they conduct blood grouping, cross-matching, and screen for transfusion-transmissible infections such as HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis. Their diligence helps prevent adverse reactions and ensures safe blood transfusions when needed.
