The Executive Presbytery of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, on Tuesday, paid a courtesy call on the President-Elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him on his victory in the December polls.
The delegation was led by the General Superintendent of the church, Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam. The General Superintendent expressed unwavering support for Mahama, pledging the church’s commitment to stand with him in his efforts to lead Ghana through its current challenges.
Reverend Wengam highlighted the divine nature of Mahama's victory, stating that it was a testament to God's intervention.
He reassured the President-Elect of the church’s prayers and support, acknowledging the church’s pride in his success.
Mahama's response
Joined by his wife, Lordina, Mr Mahama expressed deep gratitude for the prayers and guidance of the church throughout his political journey, especially during the election period.
Reflecting on the enormity of his electoral victory, Mahama emphasised that it was a result of divine grace and the collective prayers of the church.
He acknowledged the difficult road ahead, with Ghana facing severe economic challenges, and called for continued prayers from the church to help guide his leadership.
LGBTIQQ Bill
Mahama also touched on the contentious issue of the LGBTIQQ bill and was hopeful that the current President would assent to the bill and that if he doesn’t sign it then the bill would expire, and the next parliament would look at it again.
“I am reaffirming my position against the promotion of such behaviours as the Bible deems contrary to its teachings,” he stated.
Church materials
Reverend Wengam concluded the visit with prayers for the President-elect, his family, and his staff, and presented Mahama with the church's 2025 calendar, featuring the theme “Pray Without Ceasing,” along with other materials aimed at strengthening the church's mission and ethical standards.
The church leaders offered their full support as Mahama prepares for his upcoming presidency.
