President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted an Executive approval for the upgrade of seven Districts and Municipal assemblies to Municipality and Metropolitan status respectively.

A press release signed and issued in Accra by the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, said four Municipal assemblies have been elevated to Metropolitan status. They are, Ho, Sunyani, New Juaben South and Wa.

The release stated that three of the District assemblies that were elevated to Municipality status are Offinso North, Birim North and Karaga.

Reason

The release explained that the upgrade follows a request from the sector ministry in line with the relevant legal provisions as stipulated in the Local Governance Act 936 of 2016.

It however stated that the assemblies have been elevated “pending finalisation of all necessary legal and administrative processes.”
