In a shocking move, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo with immediate effect.
The decision comes after the President, in consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case had been established against the Chief Justice in respect of three petitions.
Investigation
According to a statement released by the Presidency on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, President Mahama has established a committee to investigate the petitions, as mandated by Article 146(6) of the Constitution. The committee, comprising five members, will be chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice of the Supreme Court.

- Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General
- Major Flora Bazwaura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, University of Ghana
The suspension is pending the outcome of the committee's proceedings, as stated in Article 146(10) of the Constitution. The President's decision has been made in accordance with the advice of the Council of State.
