The Ghana Chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE-Ghana) and members of the FAWE Africa Board, have held a high-level meeting with the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
The meeting which precedes the official launch of the FAWE Ghana Strategic Plan and the Mastercard Foundation Phase II Programme, focused on strengthening gender-inclusive education and skills development for the marginalised youth in the country.
FAWE delegation, scholarship
The FAWE delegation reiterated the organisation’s deep-rooted commitment to promote access to quality education for girls and other disadvantaged groups across the continent.
Over the past decade, FAWE’s scholarship programmes have supported thousands of boys and girls through secondary and tertiary education, reflecting its mission to break barriers to learning and empower the next generation.
Key discussions
Key discussions during the meeting emphasised the importance of data-driven policy-making. The team proposed tracking gender demographics from birth as a strategic approach to designing targeted and effective interventions.
Dr. Naa Momo Lartey applauded FAWE’s long-standing efforts and affirmed the Ministry’s willingness to partner initiatives that improve educational access and equity. She stressed the importance of a balanced advocacy approach, pointing out that while empowering girls is crucial, equal opportunities must also be extended to boys.
The Minister also highlighted the government's ongoing push to expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), describing it as a cornerstone of youth employment and economic empowerment under Ghana’s human capital development strategy.
As part of its new initiatives, FAWE has introduced a bridging programme under the FAWE MasterCard Programme, in partnership with local universities. This programme is designed to prepare over 1,100 young people, particularly girls, for both academic and vocational excellence and leadership in a fast-evolving global landscape.
Meeting
Present at the meeting was the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, who reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to closing the education gap and enhancing skills development for all young people in Ghana.
