The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo Esq., has emphasised the need for enhanced security collaboration as the NPA works towards implementing a 24-hour economy in the petroleum sector.
Speaking at a meeting with the Eastern Regional Minister, security heads, and key stakeholders at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Koforidua, Mr. Tameklo highlighted the vulnerability of the petroleum industry to criminal activities such as fuel smuggling, illegal siphoning, and fraudulent transactions.
Valuable commodity
He stressed that fuel is a valuable commodity, making it a prime target for illicit activities. To counter this, the NPA will partner with security agencies, including the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Police, Customs, and the Fire Service, to combat fuel-related crimes.
To strengthen this collaboration, Mr. Tameklo revealed plans to provide specialised training for security personnel to enhance their capacity in tackling petroleum-related offenses.
He underscored that the success of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative in the petroleum sector hinges on ensuring the safety of both consumers and workers.
"Petroleum is a hazardous product, and we cannot afford to overlook safety concerns," he stated, assuring that the NPA will work closely with the Fire Service and other security agencies to uphold the highest safety standards.
Armed robbery attempt
His call for increased security measures follows a recent armed robbery attempt at the Kansaworodo branch of Total fuel station in the Western Region. The attackers, who struck at dawn, were unable to access the safe as the manager, who had the keys, was not on-site.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Ms. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, expressed her support for the initiative and pledged the RCC’s cooperation in ensuring safety and regulatory compliance in the region. She also proposed integrating the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) into NPA’s operations nationwide to bolster security efforts.
Meeting
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from the NPA, security agencies, and regional authorities to strengthen collaboration, enhance enforcement, and ensure regulatory compliance in the petroleum industry.
