The event, brought together participants from various churches within the Nungua District to learn, pray, and receive medical care.
Eye care
Pastor Mrs. Asamoah Larbi emphasised the importance of early eye care, stating that maintaining good eye health from a young age helps prevent future complications. “It is very vital to take good care of the eyes right from an early stage to prevent future problems,” she noted.
The medical team at the event conducted thorough eye screenings and offered professional advice on proper eye care practices. Participants expressed gratitude for the initiative, which highlighted the need for regular eye check-ups to prevent conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts.
Glaucoma Day celebration
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Ghana observes World Glaucoma Week annually in March to raise awareness about the disease. The initiative, spearheaded by the Opthalmic Nureses Association and the Ministry of Health, includes free screenings, public education, and advocacy for early detection.
In Ghana, studies show that glaucoma accounts for about 19 per cent of blindness cases, making awareness campaigns crucial. Many eye health professionals stress the importance of regular eye check-ups, as glaucoma often develops without early symptoms but can lead to permanent vision loss if untreated.
The free eye screening at the Missionette Rally aligns with these national efforts, ensuring young girls are equipped with knowledge on how to care for their eyes from an early age.
