The government will re-introduce the National Sanitation Day(NSD)exercise next week.
The exercise will be re-launched on Wednesday, April 2,2025 with the first nationwide clean-up exercise set to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
This was contained in a press release signed on behalf of the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Amin Abdul-Rahaman.
The release explained that the exercise is part of government's commitment to improve environmental sanitation and cleanliness across the country.
Period
It further revealed that the NSD will be observed on the first Saturday of every month to create awareness and encourage community participation in environmental sanitation activities and practices.
The exercise the release stated, will also help reduce environmental sanitation-related diseases and enhance tourism and local economic development.
Meeting
As part of efforts to make the exercise successful, a stakeholders’ meeting will be held in Accra today to discuss the role of the media in the event.
Background
National Sanitation Day was first introduced in 2014 by the Government of Ghana, during the presidency of John Dramani Mahama, who was part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The day was declared on November 1, 2014, in response to the 2014 Ghanaian cholera outbreak, with the goal of promoting cleanliness and sanitation across the country.
