The National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has announced a series of activities to mark Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary.
The celebrations will include the commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident, national competitions for students, an awards programme for outstanding school children, and a grand ceremonial parade at the Forecourt of the Presidency.
Commemoration
The events will begin with the commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident, which honours the memory of three ex-servicemen who were shot in 1948 while marching to present their grievances to the British colonial administration. On March 2, the finals of a nationwide school quiz competition will be held, followed by the finals of a nationwide debate competition on March 4.
On March 5, the President will host a school children’s awards programme, celebrating academic excellence and leadership among young students. The celebrations will conclude with a ceremonial parade at the Presidency on March 6.
Wreath-laying ceremony
Ahead of the wreath-laying ceremony on February 28, the NCPC Communications Subcommittee has initiated a campaign to rekindle public interest, particularly among the youth. As part of this effort, historical content on the events leading up to the 1948 shooting will be shared on various media platforms. Additionally, a virtual discussion on X titled "The Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present” will be held to explore the evolution of civic activism in the country.
To encourage national participation, television, radio, and online media platforms will air conversations surrounding the anniversary theme. The NCPC has urged media houses, bloggers, and the general public to engage actively in discussions and promote awareness of the nation’s history.
The wreath-laying ceremony will take place at Nationalism Park at 8:00 a.m. on February 28 and will be broadcast live on multiple platforms. The committee has assured the public that more updates on the Independence Day activities will be provided in the coming weeks.
