WADEMOS Network, a prominent West African pro-democracy civil society organisation, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the people and government of the Republic of Ghana for achieving another significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.
This follows the successful conclusion of peaceful and transparent general elections, culminating in a smooth political transition.
In a press release, WADEMOS Network lauded Ghana for its exemplary democratic practices, which have earned the country a reputation as a beacon of hope in West Africa. The inauguration of Ghana’s sixth president since its return to democracy in 1992 took place on January 7, 2025.
President John Mahama was sworn in following his victory at the polls, an event that signifies the country's continued commitment to democratic principles.
Stark Contrast
The Network highlighted the stark contrast between Ghana’s democratic progress and the challenges faced by the broader West African subregion, which has been marred by the erosion of presidential term limits, human rights abuses, and unconstitutional changes in government.
In this context, Ghana’s stability and adherence to democratic norms stand out as a model for neighbouring countries.
WADEMOS Network underscored the significant responsibilities awaiting President Mahama, not only on the domestic front but also in regional and international spheres.
Exit
Of immediate concern is the impending exit of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), scheduled for January 29, 2025. This development has introduced uncertainty and heightened threats to human rights in the subregion.
The Network called on President Mahama to leverage his position and experience to engage with the leaders of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to prevent their withdrawal from ECOWAS. Such diplomatic efforts are crucial to maintaining regional integration and stability, which are vital for the subregion’s collective progress.
Regional instability
Emphasising the importance of upholding democratic principles, WADEMOS Network reminded President Mahama that the current regional instability stems from failures to respect citizens' rights and democratic governance. However, the Network expressed confidence in President Mahama’s ability to champion these causes and work towards reversing the trend of democratic backsliding.
The Network urged President Mahama to support the revision of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, advocating for the standardisation of a two-term limit for all Heads of State and Governments within the subregion. Such reforms are deemed necessary to curb the extension of presidential terms and ensure the sustainability of democratic governance.
Democratic credentials
In its closing remarks, WADEMOS Network celebrated Ghana’s democratic achievements and called on other West African nations to draw inspiration from Ghana’s experience. The Network reaffirmed its commitment to promoting free, fair, and credible elections, human rights, and inclusive governance across the region.
WADEMOS Network is looking forward to a productive partnership with President Mahama and wishes him and the people of Ghana a successful and prosperous term ahead.
