The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam has called for swift and firm action against offenders of what he described as the ugly incidents and lingering tensions over election disputes.
He said irrespective of their political colours or partisan connections, perpetrators of incidents such as looting, arson and the pockets of violence leading to deaths in some cases must be brought to book.
Message
The General Superintendent made the call in his Christmas message yet to be aired. The message touched on social, political, economic and other activities that will enhance societal development.
Reverend Wengam stated that the mighty arm of God was profoundly manifest in seeing Ghana through the high- stake, tension-packed, and much anticipated elections.
He said the loss of lives, the pockets of violence, the cases of arson, and the spree of looting were deeply regrettable and totally unacceptable.
Reverend Wengam observed that these incidents were “an indelible stain on the nation's reputation as a beacon of democratic accomplishment in Africa.”
The General Superintendent was convinced that when perpetrators are made to face the laws it will help make Ghana’s democracy more participatory, and demonstrably responsive to the tangible needs and aspirations of the people.
Significance of Christmas
Touching on the significance of the Birth of Jesus Christ, about two thousand years ago, Rev Wengam explained that it is an opportunity for “God the Father to show His love and enact His redemptive plan for humanity with a majestic flourish.”
Unquestionably, he said, Christmas “is a time for joy-pure joy, joy-unconfined. In our joyous mood, however, we must inject moderation and circumspection into the celebration so that we don’t impose an avoidable financial burden on ourselves thereafter.”
Christmas he further stated, also obliges everybody to demonstrate love “for our families, fellow Christians, non-Christians, friends, colleagues, seniors, juniors, bosses, subordinates, neighbours, political allies and opponents, and countrymen and women in general. The foremost targets should be the poor and vulnerable in our midst, communities, and deprived parts of the country.”
He observed that while making merry and showing love to others, it is “imperative to count our blessings and reflect on our lives as individuals and nations.”
In a nutshell, he stated that “God has been good to us, no matter our circumstances. In the face of bitingly bitter economic challenges, He lavished His grace on us.”
Send the Light
On the theme for the year 2024 he indicated that the birth of Jesus was God’s way of sending the light to humankind.
“We must reciprocate this awesome gesture by using the yuletide to invade every space and platform with the Gospel light of Jesus. Seize this Kairos moment to share a gospel tract. Use this Christmas event to post a Gospel message on all social media platform” Reverend Wengam added.
He charged Assemblies of God members to undertake door to door evangelism urging other Churches to also grab “these rare opportunities to plant churches in unreached communities.”
Sermons
He advised that every sermon this Christmas season must focus also on Salvation stressing that“Let’s make the season relevant by flooding the Kingdom of God with many saved souls.”
This, the General Superintendent noted, will please the father and provoke unimaginable blessings on Assemblies of God, Ghana and the nation as a whole.
