Ghana is taking a significant step towards strengthening its resilience against socio-economic shocks with the development of the National Social Protection Shock Responsive Strategy (NSPSRS).
This came to light at a four-day technical working session, at Koforidua in the Eastern Region. Organised by the Social Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, the event brought together key stakeholders to draft the strategy, its Implementation Plan, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Meeting, discussions
The meeting provided an opportunity for experts to refine the draft strategy and ensure it effectively addresses vulnerabilities during economic downturns, natural disasters, and health emergencies.
Key discussions centered on reviewing progress made, strengthening contextual analysis, integrating gender and disability perspectives, and mapping out risks to guide Ghana’s response framework.
Participants also deliberated on the structure and content of the SOPs, ensuring a well-coordinated approach to social protection during times of crisis.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, the Director of the Social Protection Directorate, Madam Francisca Abena Atuluk, commended stakeholders for their dedication to shaping a responsive and inclusive strategy. She emphasised the urgency of developing a robust framework that prioritises the needs of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities and marginalised communities.
She also urged participants to actively contribute their expertise to refine the draft document for timely submission to the Minister.
The working session featured in-depth presentations on key thematic areas, including governance arrangements, social accountability, case management, and the overall vision of the NSPSRS.

Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the strategy’s development and ensuring its effective implementation to enhance Ghana’s social protection system.
Once finalised, the NSPSRS will serve as a critical roadmap for responding to national crises, ensuring swift and effective support for affected individuals and households.
