The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong warning to Heads of Basic Schools over the imposition of unauthorised registration fees on candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This follows some allegations circulating on social media about the practice.
Statement
In a statement dated February 12, 2025, GES emphasised that these fees are unauthorised and directed all Heads of Basic Schools to halt the practice immediately. Regional Directors have also been instructed to alert District Directors to monitor the situation and caution all Heads of Basic Schools involved.
Sanctions
The GES further stated that any Head who has collected such unauthorised fees must promptly refund the monies. Failure to comply will attract sanctions. The statement reminded Heads of Basic Schools that late registration of candidates will not be permitted. Therefore, all eligible candidates must be registered within the stipulated period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The public has been advised to take note of this directive. The statement was signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit at GES.
