The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reclaimed the parliamentary seat in Tema West for the first time in 28 years. Lawyer James Enu, the NDC candidate, secured a decisive victory with 49,225 votes, representing 54.06 per cent of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender, Denis Ampofo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 27,618 votes, making up 35.94 per cent.
A total of 448 ballots were rejected, bringing the total valid votes to 76,483 out of a total votes cast of 77,291. The collation of results took place at Tema Senior High School in Community Five, under tight security and the watchful eyes of party representatives and election observers.
Victory speech
Lawyer James Enu, in his victory speech, dedicated the win to God, saying, "Victory comes from God. This is a testament to His faithfulness."
The victory is a historic one for the NDC, as it marks the first time since 1996 that the party has won the Tema West parliamentary seat. The constituency has long been considered an NPP stronghold, with the ruling party dominating in successive elections since the establishment of the Fourth Republic.
Tema West’s voting history reflects a trend of loyalty to the NPP, which consistently clinched the seat over the years due to its industrial base and urban voter dynamics. This year's result, however, indicates a shift, with many residents expressing dissatisfaction with economic challenges and calling for new representation.
James Enu’s win is seen as a significant milestone, reshaping the political landscape in Tema and boosting the morale of the NDC as they prepare for future elections.
