Political parties and their presidential candidates contesting the December 7 elections have signed a peace pact to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
The parties and their candidates committed to maintaining peace before, during, and after the polls.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged all political parties to accept the results of the upcoming elections.
Reassurance
Chairperson Jean Mensa reassured the public that robust measures are in place to ensure the elections are peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.
Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Jean Mensa encouraged confidence in the electoral process and emphasized the importance of a peaceful and stable environment during the elections.
She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting peace throughout the electoral process leading up to the 2024 general elections.
NPP, NDC
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made a passionate appeal to political parties, the media, and security agencies to preserve peace during and after the elections. He stressed the need for all actors to ensure peace prevails, emphasizing that Ghana has always passed the test of democracy during elections.
Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, expressed concerns about the lack of action against those who instigate violence, stating that this undermines confidence in the peace pact.
He emphasised that peace pacts must be backed by swift actions, or they risk being rendered meaningless.
National Peace Council
The National Peace Council earlier convened a meeting with representatives from all political parties and their presidential candidates in the upcoming December 7 elections, to sign a peace pact aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
The peace agreement will bind candidates to uphold peace before, during, and after the elections, committing to conduct their campaigns in a manner that promotes national unity and stability.
Peace pact
The Presidential Election Peace Pact, organised under the auspices of the National Peace Council (NPC) and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), was on the theme: “Pursuing Peaceful Elections, Non-Violence and Justice”.
This is the fourth time the NPC and IDEG have organised the signing of the Presidential Peace Pact after similar ones were held in 2020, 2016 and 2012.
Notable personalities who attended the event included the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa; the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare; the Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas.
