The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has called on Church members to pray fervently and intercede for lost souls.
He said the members have a divine mandate to pursue missions and to save the world saying the fastest way to achieve that and to sharpen the edge of the Gospel is through prayer.
“Without prayer, the Gospel will crawl” he added.
Rev Wengam made the call at the Commendation and Retirement Service in honour of Reverend Dr and Mrs Sylvanus Amegashiti Elorm at the Trinity Chapel, Assemblies of God in Tema on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
Rev Dr Elorm led the Trinity Chapel for 17 years and started with only eight members but now the church has grown and has a membership of over 500. He was called into ministry for a total of 25 years.
The service brought together both current and former members of the Executive Presbytery, the clergy from other churches, some members of the General Council of the Church, family members and friends of Rev Dr Elorm.
Among the dignitaries were the wife of the General Superintendent, Mrs Monica Wengam, the Founder of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and a Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Victor Jones Mawulom Dotse.
Preaching a sermon, the General Superintendent prayed God to restore the spirit of prayer in the church.
“I came to challenge the church. Let's wake up to our intercessory role.” Rev Wengam further urged members.
The General Superintendent expressed conviction that “prayer is critical in this mission of the church, you will agree with me that there are places you cannot go because of visa issues. There are places you cannot go because you're a man of God. But prayer has no geographical boundary.”
He said based on John 3:16, God doesn't hate the world, even though the world is against him adding that for God so loved the world that he sent His only begotten Son to come and die for our sins.
Rev Wengam advised the church to pray to God and ask Him to align them with the ministry of Jesus Christ who in Hebrews 7: 25 lived to make intercession for us and even after he resurrected and ascended to Heaven.
“The real work is prayer. That's why Jesus never hurried into ministry until he committed himself to prayer. He never went out to preach until he had woken up” the General Superintendent reminded the church.
He intimated that prayer is an ongoing assignment and engagement with heaven and “the native air of the believer; Just as oxygen is to human life, so prayer is your spiritual life.”
Rev Wengam stated that “any Christian without a prayer life is dead and powerless. We are not talking about just any prayer we are talking about quality prayer.”
The General Superintendent indicated that in Matthew 9:37, Jesus said, pray that the Lord of the harvest will send labourers.
“We are called upon to pray for souls and in Psalm 2 verse 8, He says, give me the nations as of me, and I shall give thee the hidden for thy inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession” he said.
Evangelism
On the need to embark on evangelism, Rev Wengam expressed worry that currently 42 per cent of the World's population have not been reached with the Gospel.
“Majority haven't heard the gospel within that percentage. I was shocked last week when I heard, in some parts of Ghana now, there is no single church, neither is there a single Christian living in those communities yet when you come to the City, there are churches and Christians all over the place”he pointed out.
Stand still
Rev Wengam made references to Genesis 18:16-33; Exodus 25:40;Revelations 7:9; among other scriptures to buttress his argument.
He urged pastors and leaders of the church to stand still before the Lord in any situation just like Abraham did in the book of Genesis.
He pointed out that Abraham interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah and even his family members including Lot.
“There are many who are quick to leave God's presence. And that is why we have all the struggles and the mistakes and the underperformance. Abraham was not in a hurry to disengage from God” the General Superintendent added.
